The Council or Registered Gas Installers (CORGI) is widely recognised as the national watchdog for gas safety in the UK. The building services industry has been the subject of much criticism in recent years with television shows like ‘Rogue Traders’ highlighting appalling service, botched jobs and customers being overcharged for poor workmanship. Several new additions to the building regulations aim to increase accountability and marginalise cowboy operators in the sector. Part G (Sanitation), Part P (Electrics) and Part L (Energy Efficiency) now place a duty on tradesmen to certify via the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) any ‘notifiable’ installations. This is geared to help introduce the Home Buyers Information Pack. The government’s ultimate aim is to increase safety, regulation and set industry standards for previously unregulated trades. CORGI were one of the first organisations to embrace the changes to the building regulations and have now introduced a number of ‘Competent Persons’ schemes that tradesmen (after completion of an onsite assessment) can join and ‘Self Certify’ their work to LABC. CORGI currently operates a Part G (Sanitation) Scheme with which all PlumbLocal franchisees are compliant. They also operate a defined scope Part P (Electrical) scheme in addition to energy efficient and ventilation schemes. Local Services was one of the first organisations to work with CORGI to become ‘Part G Compliant’.

ELECSA are an electrical competent person’s scheme and work in partnership with ElecLocal to ensure compliance with the notifiable and certification requirements of Part P of the building regulations. Their sister company FENSA was originally formed at the request of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) to operate a notification scheme for window and door installers. When Part P of the building regulations was introduced ELECSA were one of the select few companies chosen to operate the scheme as they had many years experience operating a reliable notification scheme.

All ElecLocal electricians register with the ELECSA competent person’s scheme. Membership is subject to holding the relevant qualifications, safety documents and onsite assessment. ElecLocal’s partnership with ELECSA also extends to the use of their automated notification system
